The String

Welcome to another adventure from the Thousand Acre Woods. A place on the edge of Trollheim, deep within the mysterious NJ Pine Belt! Tales chronicled by Christopher Jonathan Hulton...That's me! Today's tale, Karl wakes up with a string around his finger and he can't remember why.

After reading our latest story, make sure to tell a friend, and check out our Trollheim books below!

"What is that string for?" Karl just woke up. "I had to tie it on for something, but I can't remember."

Karl waking up in bed with a string tied to his finger.

Karl threw his feet over the side and just stared. "It has to be something important."

He opened the window and looked out, thinking that the fresh air would jog something.

Karl with chin in his hand looking out the window.

"But what? Was I supposed to meet Gramps? Do I have a client today? Was there some great trick to play on Angrboda, or was it to learn to quit screwing with her?

Karl looking at the string on his finger while standing.

She is good at revenge—what is it!"

He went downstairs and checked the kitchen table for notes. He checked the coffee table for signs that he had company before he went to bed. Was it a birthday or an anniversary? He missed his mother's once, and she avoided him for a century the last time.

Karl yelling with spread hands on his kitchen table with a vase.

Sometimes, he forgets on purpose; the 15th century was his favorite time. It was quiet.

Did he owe Peggy? The last time he ignored her invoice, she turned him into a pine lizard, and thrown into a litter of kittens… was he supposed to deliver some remedies to the Bergfolk on the left ass cheek of Half Moon Hill?

What was it!!!

He flopped on the couch. It was driving him crazy!!!!!

Karl face planting over couch.

Angrboda and Grams were peeking through the window, laughing. When Karl looked up, they spun and slid down the side of his house, trying to quiet their giggles.

"Grams, that was just genius! Sneaking in while he was snoring and tiying that string to his finger."

Karl talking to raven in a tree.

Following the Harry N. Abrams, Inc. tradition of the series that created Brian Froud's and Alan Lee's Faeries and Gnomes by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet, we present you with what would have been the next book in the series: Trolls: A Compendium. Trolls—do you think you know what they are? Could you be wrong?

Trolls within Scandinavian lore, myth, saga, fantasy, and folktales are actually anything magical within our northern neighbor's culture. Richly illustrated in this volume are the tales of faeries, dwarves, nissen, huldras, gods, Jotuns, draugar, ghosts, and more. Also, this book introduces our readers to the world of Trollheim, populated by Nattrolls that escaped the 17th-century Swedish colony within the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Narrated by Christopher Jonathan Hulton, who lives in the Thousand Acre Woods just after the Civil War, their tales are filled with Native American lore and tales of their neighbor, the Jersey Devil.
